In 1992 the South Dakota Schools Group Insurance Pool (SDSGIP) was formed. As a fully insured pool made up of school districts in South Dakota, SDSGIP was developed to achieve affordable insurance options for its members. Since then, SDSGIP has successfully negotiated favorable increases with multiple carriers, most recently with Sanford Health Plan.
The pool is currently comprised of 59 public entities in South Dakota. In order to further the vision of the pool and comply with the Affordable Care Act, they are developing a self-funded trust beginning July 1, 2017. In addition to this change the SDSGIP has changed their name to Northern Plains Insurance Pool – a strategy to provide insurance solutions not only to schools, but all public entities in the Midwest.
